Race Format

The course is 1,5Km in length with approximately 3 man-made and 3 natural obstacles.

The obstacles will be placed in such a way to break the flow of the on-bike racing, forcing the riders to dismount and push or carry their bikes through the obstacle. There will also be recovery zones of flat riding to allow the riders to rest before the next obstruction.

The first rider crossing the finish line and having completed the most number of laps in the allocated race time shall be declared the winner.

Participants will be required to finish with their bikes, either riding on, pushing or carrying it.

Registration and number collection:

Late/Line Entries & Number Collection will take place on race morning at the venue from 07h30 onwards if the entry limit has not been reached (Cash, SnapScan & Zapper). R20 Surcharge on Late Entries

Allowable Bikes:

  • Elite category - only UCI specific Cyclocross bikes i.e. both wheels same size 700c fitted with max width 35mm tyres, classic “drop” bar handle bars of max width 500mm, both front and rear wheel brakes
  • General and junior categories - any single rider (no tandems), non-motorized (including e-bikes) bike falling into the classifications of: road, cyclocross , mountain, gravel and BMX bikes.
  • NO tandems
  • NO E-bikes
  • Bikes must be in good working condition with all mechanical parts operational and brakes fully functional.
  • Inappropriate fittings to a bicycle, such as carriers, paniers or other similar will not be permitted.
  • It is also advised to remove all lights and reflectors from the bikes to make them as easy as possible to carry or push during the off-bike segments of the race.

Compulsory Equipmet:

All riders shall wear the following protective equipment:

  • Cycling specific helmets suitable for the activity. No helmet, no ride.
  • Closed shoes with socks - remember that you will have to dismount from your bike (on foot sections)
  • Appropriate clothing. Shirts require sleeves that cover the shoulders and upper arms (no vests or tank tops).
  • Gloves are recommended but not compulsory.

Course/Route:

  • The route for the race will be a course in a single direction only (one-way riding). Riders will adhere to the race direction at all times. Participants found to be proceeding in the wrong direction will be disqualified.
  • The cyclocross course will contain several obstacles that are placed to force a rider to dismount. These are to test the skill of the participant but a few higher skilled riders may attempt the obstacle without dismounting. Participants should be advised to proceed with caution at the obstacles and there is no shame in dismounting the bike and proceeding on foot, carrying or pushing the bike; this is the idea behind the cyclocross race format.
  • The course will be marked with a boundary (fence, bunting tape or similar) as much as possible throughout its entirety to indicate the racing zone. Participants are to race within this boundary at all times.
  • All obstacles will be marked along the course, warning riders of an impending obstruction as well as the most hazardous being attended by a marshal.

Pit Zone:

Cyclocross racing permits the use of a pit area where racers can host spare bikes, parts and service crew.

  • Racers will be permitted only 1 spare bike and 1 crew member with a discrete selection of tools. Crew members are not permitted on the race course and shall stay within the pit zone during the race.
  •  Crew members should be easily identifiable to race officials by means of the official tag of corresponding race number to that of the participant. Crew member tags will be provided along with the timing chip in the entrants’ race pack upon registration.
  • A racer may only receive outside assistance within the designated pit zone. Assistance provided outside of the pit zone will result in a rider DNF result.
  • The pit zone shall be marshalled to ensure rider safety when entering and exiting the pit.
  • Use of the pit zone is not compulsory and riders may choose to race unsupported.
  • Rider support crew in the pit zone are required to be ready before the start of the race and clear the pit zone as soon as the race is concluded. The window for crew transition between races is short so prompt interchange is required.
  • The pit zone will be closed at the start of the race and opened once all participants have crossed the start line. Since the pit zone is planned to be positioned just after the start/finish line, it will allow riders to complete a lap before entering the pits.
