REA CYCLE CHALLENGE COWHOUSE MARKET-HAZELDEAN

Thank you for the opportunity to present our portfolio of what Race to End Alzheimer’s NPC (REA) is doing in order to raise funds for Alzheimer’s, and its objectives for 2019.

We are proud to announce that an official non-profit company (NPC) was formed and registered on the 7th May 2018. Our NPC has four directors who are all passionate about the cause for Alzheimer’s, each with their own story. They are Mr Gordon Halford, Mrs Helen Halford (previously Charalambous), Mr Trevor Corin and Mrs Drienie Claassens.

REA’s Vision:

To assist, train and support carers and families who live with Alzheimer’s.

REA’s Mission:

·                     Raising awareness in the community about the illness.

·                     Training carers in all aspects of caring for an individual with the illness.

·                     Providing carers in homes who have family members with the illness.

·                     Assist in other ways ie: a wheelchair/walker/adult nappies etc where the family do not have the funds to do so.

A bit of history “where do we come from”

The start of REA was in 2014 as an unofficial fund raiser initiative by a handful of passionate individuals for Alzheimer’s.

1)      REA’s first relay run was from Johannesburg to Durban over five days. This was very successful and comprised of twenty runners and five support team members.

2)      The Moreleta picnic was held for carers and their loved ones. This event was put together in 2014 to raise awareness of the illness.

3)      A second run from Johannesburg to Durban soon followed in 2015 with ten runners and five support team members.

4)      A small walk in Wilgers Estate sponsored by Willows Crossing was held in 2015.

5)      The Ladies Golf Clinic held at Silver Lakes Golf Estate in 2016 was enjoyed by all the ladies and helped raise funds and awareness. FNB assisted with donations and prizes.

6)      2017 provided the biggest challenge of all the REA runs to date. The four Baines passes in the Cape. Ten runners and five support team members once again came together to do this challenging relay run for Alzheimer’s.

7)      A full golf day sponsored by South African Bank of Athens in 2017.

8)      The 2018 event was the Race to End Alzheimer’s first official fund raiser. A Greek evening held at Filos, Roper Street, Pretoria. Due to the great success of this function REA is planning to make this an annual event.

REA has managed to raise since 2014 – 2018, the sum of R896,000.00(Rands Eight hundred and ninety Six Thousand ONLY) being NET Profit. These funds were utilised on providing monthly stipends to volunteers as per REA’s Vision and raising awareness in the community about the illness. Going forward in 2019, REA has added more to our Mission as stated above.
