CCYC Ermelo History:

The Christian Social Council (CMR) and the local Department of Social Development identified a need for a residential care facility in the Gert Sibande area in the beginning of the 2008/2009 financial year. Throughout the year all surrounding places of safety and children’s homes were full to maximum capacity. The HIV and AIDS pandemic, poverty and social dysfunction lead to the need to place children in alternative care. Some children need to be removed in crises situations and suitable temporary safe care is often very difficult to find. It was also found that some children in need of care, need institutional care, as their needs cannot be met in foster placement

Caregivers were recruited and screened by CMR Ermelo as suitable foster parents and they moved into the house, which was made available by the owner for the purpose of a children’s home, in January 2009. With great support from the community and churches, furniture and equipment could be collected to equip the house. The vision was that this house should be used for Child and Youth Care Centre placement for those children that cannot be placed elsewhere. This house was named Francis House. This property was later sold by the owners and the CMR Ermelo bought a new house in 2010-the name of the new house – house Samuel – means “I have asked it from the Lord”! With the help of donors, the house was renovated and became a beautiful home for the children.

The other house needed renovations before it could be utilised. With a lot of support and donations from the community and churches and a lot of inputs from the management committee, this house was renovated and fully equipped. The second pair of caregivers moved into the house during April 2009. The first child was placed in this house in April 2009. The vision was that this house be used as a Temporary Safe Care facility for 15 children. This house is named “Chasia House” – means “Protected by God”!

A need was identified for a separate temporary safe care facility for babies. Many applications for placement of babies were received and these babies could not be admitted at the temporary safe care home, as they could not accommodate more than one baby at a time, even if the facility itself was not officially full. The double garage, office and storeroom at the Pet Street property were transformed into a new unit where 6 babies can be accommodated. Two benefactors donated R230 000.00 for the renovation of the building. A lot of the furniture and clothes were donated by the community. The official opening of the extension was on the 7th June 2013. In the first five months after opening, seven babies in total were accommodated.

Since January 2009 a lot of marketing was done in order to raise funds, equipment, household items, food, and volunteers etc. for the facility. As a result, the project was “owned” by the community. The Department of Social Development of the Mpumalanga Province registered the CMR Child and Youth Care Centre on 24 February 2009, with registration number 65/2009/GS. The CMR CYCC was registered as a Non-Profit Organization on 7 January 2010. The facility received subsidy from the Department of Social Services as from July 2010 in order to sustain the service financially. In July 2015, the project was re – registered by the Department of Social Development for the next 5 years up to 31 March 2020 – it was FULLY registered.
